What is HomePlug / Powerline technology?

Powerline technology uses existing powerline wiring to convey digital data from one computer to another. The wiring serves as the network, and each electrical outlet serves as a connection point on the network.

Thus it allows you to simply set up a network by plugging into any electrical outlet making it possible for instant connectivity. Transferring data over the powerline network doesn’t interfere with other electrical devices plugged in around the home because electricity and data are transmitted at very different frequencies.

HomePlugs are a simple but very effective way to transmit data around your home. HomePlugs use the powerline supply to transmit data, rather than radio waves that wireless solutions use. In order to do this a minimum of two HomePlugs are required.

HomePlug AV

The HomePlug AV specification, which was introduced in August 2005, provides sufficient bandwidth for applications such as HDTV and VoIP. HomePlug AV offers a peak data rate of 200 Mbs at the physical layer, and about 80 Mbs at the MAC layer. HomePlug AV devices are required to coexist, and optionally to interoperate, with HomePlug 1.0 devices. Utilizing adaptive modulation on up to 1155 OFDM sub-carriers, turbo convolution codes for error correction, two-level MAC framing with ARQ, and other techniques, HomePlug AV can achieve near the theoretical maximum bandwidth across a given transmission path. For security reasons, the specification includes key distribution techniques and the use of 128 bit AES encryption. Furthermore, the specification’s adaptive techniques present inherent obstacles to eavesdropping and cyber attacks. Some Qualcomm Atheros-based adapters comply with the HomePlug AV specification but employ a proprietary extension that increases the PHY-rate to 500 Mbit/s primarily by using a wider spectrum.

HomePlug AV2

The HomePlug AV2 specification was introduced in January 2012, it is interoperable with HomePlug AV and HomePlug GreenPHY devices and is IEEE 1901 standard compliant. It features gigabit-class PHY-rate, support for MIMO PHY, repeating functionalities and power saving modes. Can use the bandwidth from 30-86 MHz as additional bandwidth. The first generation are generally considered to be 20% faster than HomePlug AV 500, it is often sold as HomePlug 600. They do not support MIMO, but only single streams due to the Atheros chipset architecture (QCA7450/AR1540). October 2013 Qualcomm announced the QCA7500 with support for 2×2 MIMO which supposedly will double data transfer rates. Devolo from Germany has made proprietrary improvements on the standard, and are using the ground wire in addition to phase and null.

Which HomePlugs are compatible with each other?

How do I solve wireless blind spot issues?

Fixing the Problem There are various ways in which you could solve these issues. One is to relocate the wireless router to a location that is optimal, which requires trial and error tests. However, as with many homes, there are issues with relocating the wireless router as the access point is fixed. Here are alternative methods to solve these issues:

a. DIY Method Some of the DIY Methods have been covered in the articles that you have provided. These include:

  • Keep Wireless Devices Away from Router Wireless devices such as cordless phones will interfere with the wireless signals being broadcasted by the wireless router. Keeping such devices away from the router will reduce these interferences.
  • Aluminium Foil / Can Using aluminium foil or can to redirect the signals, may help to improve the wireless signal as it bounces the signal away from a location that does not need a wireless signal (e.g. outside your home).

b. Wireless Products These methods may help to improve your wireless signal.

However, they have their limitations and may not be as effective as the wireless solutions that are in the market.

  • Wireless Router Purchasing a new Wireless Router with the latest technologies will definitely help to improve wireless speeds and signals. Things to look out for in a new Wireless Router:

– Wireless Standards The current standard for wireless routers is Wireless-N. The new Wireless-AC standard can significantly improve wireless speeds.

– Dual Band Technology Many devices such as microwaves, cordless phones and even Bluetooth work on the 2.4GHz wireless signal which will interfere with the wireless signals. Getting a wireless router with Dual Band technology can help users speed up their connection by connecting to the less congested 5GHz wireless signal, which has multiple non-overlapping channels.

– Multi-User Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MU MIMO) Technology The dawn of mobile technology has brought many wireless devices into the lives of its users, many of which requires a wireless network connection. With many devices connecting to a single wireless router, it would cause your wireless speed to slow down. MU MIMO, to put it simply, helps distribute the load amongst the various devices which help improve wireless speeds.

  • Wireless Repeaters Wireless repeaters are an easy way to expand the wireless router’s range. Perform a one-time configuration to connect to your wireless router’s network and you simply move it around the house to choose a location that optimises the wireless signal. We recommends the Aztech WL580E Wall-Plugged 300Mbps Dual Band Concurrent Wireless-N Repeater (image attached: WL580_Front.png). It has a Recommended Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) that helps you choose a location that will help you optimise the wireless signal.
  • Wireless HomePlugs Wireless Repeaters may help expand your wireless range but wireless signals may still have difficulty passing through thick walls. HomePlugs overcome this issue by transmitting data through the electrical powerline within your home. HomePlugs work in pairs – one connected to the router and the other in the room that you need an internet connection – and they need to be plugged directly to the power point. Aztech offers a wide range of HomePlugs to suit various needs – from the basic HomePlug to HomePlugs with AC-Passthrough and Wireless features.

How secure is HomePlug?

The majority of the homes share a transformer with several neighbours, putting several houses on one circuit and thereby making it theoretically possible for the neighbours to access your network. To completely eliminate this potential problem, all HomePlug AV encrypts all data with 128-bit AES encryption whereas 85Mbps HomePlug encrypts all data with 56-bit DES encryption before it is transmitted around the power lines. For further security, all our HomePlug series have encryption that enables you to change the encryption password to make it unique to your network and ensure that your neighbours cannot eavesdrop on your network traffic. Note: Encryption is a method of security used to prevent intruders or unwanted access from within or outside your network. Encryption is usually not enabled by default and must be ‘configured’ using the Utility software provided in the packaging.

What is "Simple Connect"?

Does Blink pan and tilt?

Blink’s included mount will allow you to easily adjust the positioning of, and pan, tilt or swivel the camera. Blink’s positioning and/or view cannot yet be controlled via the app.

What is the range of the Sync Module? How far away can camera units be placed?

Assuming a fairly standard home (single building, no unusually dense construction materials), the Sync Module should be able to communicate with Blink units up to (and perhaps over) 100’ away in any direction.

How many cameras can I add to a single system?

Each system can currently support up to a total of 10 Blink cameras. The Sync Module is not included in the 10 device limit.

Will my pet set off Blink’s motion detector?

To help account for pets, Blink’s motion detector can be adjusted for sensitivity.

Can Blink detect motion through a window or glass?

No, Blink’s PIR sensor cannot detect motion through glass, so a camera positioned behind a window will not create clips when armed. However, it can be faced out a window, or through glass, for use with Live View.

What kind of batteries does Blink use? Are they easy to replace?

Blink is powered by two AA Lithium batteries. All systems will ship with batteries, and they’re easy to replace when the time comes; simply slide open the battery compartment, take out the old batteries, and insert the new set.

How long does the battery last?

With standard use, Blink’s battery life should last 2 years!

What’s “standard use?”

Standard use is defined as 8,000 five-second events or 40,000 total seconds of video recording (include Live View usage). With an average just over 10 motion recorded clips per day, your camera should last on a single set of AA lithium batteries for 2 years!

Where is recorded video stored?

Blink’s default setting will store all video on our secure servers, which you can access directly via the Blink App. You also have the ability, at any time, to download a clip or clips from the server and save to your preferred location.

Are video clips limited to five seconds? Can I change that?

No, and yes! Clip length will be customizable up to 10 seconds.

What’s Live View?

Live View mode allows you to view any camera from the Blink app, at any time, whether or not you’ve received an alert.

Can I record when I’m in Live View mode?

Not yet; but this is a feature under consideration for future release!

Is Live View continuous?

With Blink’s Live View feature you can stream 30 seconds of live video at a time. After 30 seconds, a pop-up will appear asking you if you want to “Continue” and you can tap this to keep watching, however it will not stream video continuously.

How much storage do I get for recorded videos?

Blink’s server provides each system storage for up to 7,200 total seconds of video (or 1,440 five-second events). If you reach your storage limit, your oldest alert clips will be overwritten by the newest.

How much data does a single clip use?

A five-second motion clip with audio will use up to 750KB of data. This is important to note in the event that you are accessing clips via a cellular network, rather than a WiFi connection.

Does Blink integrate with other Smart Home platforms and devices?

Our initial Blink product won’t offer this functionality, but it’s a feature we know is important to many of our backers and customers. We want to make Blink as user-friendly as possible, including integration with other Smart Home products down the road. Blink does currently integrate Amazon Alexa enabled devices through the “Blink for Home” skill found in your Amazon Alexa app.

Does Blink integrate with Amazon Alexa?

Blink does currently integrate Amazon Alexa enabled devices through the “Blink for Home” skill found in your Amazon Alexa app. You can now arm, disarm and receive system information using your voice alone once connected.

What if I don’t have WiFi?

Blink currently requires a WiFi-based Internet connection to operate. For future products, we are researching the possibility of offering cellular service, as well.

Does Blink come with a warranty?

Yes! It comes with 2 years warranty.

(II) Setting up the Sync Module

Thanks to Blink’s wire-free design, the Sync Module is the only part of the system that will need to be plugged in!

1. Tap the Blink logo to begin.

2. Tap the Add a system button. A system consists of a Sync Module and one or more cameras.

3. Give your system a name such as “Home” or “Office”.

4. Tap the Sync Module in the bottom lefthand corner. You’ll want to make sure that your mobile device is connected to the same WiFi network that you plan to connect Blink to. You’ll also need to know your WiFi name and password and the serial number of your Sync Module. Tap the Ready button.

5. Enter the serial number of your Sync Module, or tap the camera icon to scan it with your phone’s camera. The serial number will begin with a 2 and can be located on the label on the underside of the Sync Module. Once the serial number has been entered, tap Continue.

6. The app will now ask you to plug in your Sync Module. Once you plug it in, wait about 30 seconds until you see a solid green light and a flashing blue light. When you have that light pattern, tap “I see a blinking blue light”.

You will now be directed to open up the Settings app on your phone and go to WiFi. Do that, and connect to the Blink-#### network.

8. Once you’ve connected to the Blink-#### network, go back to the Blink app by double tapping your home button and tapping Blink.

9. The app will pull up a list of available WiFi networks. Locate and tap your home WiFi network.

10. Carefully enter your WiFi password and tap Join on your keyboard.

11. Shortly after that, you’ll receive a message saying “Sync Module added!”. Your Sync Module should now display solid blue and green LEDs. Once you receive that message, tap Done.

(III) Adding your Camera(s)

You will add your camera(s) one at a time. However, with Blink’s simple setup and multi-camera compatibility, you can easily add cameras to your system at any point down the road should you choose to start with one or purchase more later.

1. At this point, you should now be at your Blink home screen. Go ahead and tap the “Add a Blink camera” button.

2. Insert the batteries into your camera. The camera will blink red at this time. This is normal.

3. Enter the serial number of your camera, or tap the camera icon to scan it with your phone’s camera. Once the serial number has been entered, tap Continue.

4. On the next screen, you will be asked to name your camera. Go ahead and name it whatever you’d like and tap done on your keyboard.

5. Place the camera where you’d like it and tap the snapshot button.

6. You’ll now see a picture from your camera as well as its signal strength to both your wireless router and your Sync Module. Make sure you have at least 3 bars for each of these.

7. When you’re ready, tap Done in the upper righthand corner of the app.

8. You’ll now be back at the Blink home screen. If you have additional cameras to add to your account, repeat steps 1-7.

Mounting your Blink Camera

1. Your Blink camera comes with a mounting bracket and a screw.

2. To begin mounting your Blink camera, please remove the back cover of the unit.

3. Flip over the camera backplate, there is a circular piece of plastic that needs to be removed. All you need to do is press on this piece of plastic from the inside of the back cover.

4. Once the circular insert has been removed, your backplate should look like this:

5. At this point, you can reattach the back cover to the camera and then attach the mounting bracket by firmly pressing it until you hear it snap in place.

6. Use Live View for this camera by tapping this icon . You should hold your camera in the location you plan to install it. Verify that this location will give you a good view of the area you are trying to cover.

The best motion detection occurs when a subject walks across the field of view from one side to another rather than directly toward or away from the camera. Please keep this in mind for optimal motion detection before mounting your camera.

Once you find the optimal location for your camera, screw the mount into place. Please note, use of the included screw for mounting will create a hole in the wall surface.

7. Once mounted to the wall, you can rotate the mounting bracket and open and close the hinge to pick the perfect angle for your camera. Use the Live View button to verify positioning. See examples below:

First Time Usage

How can I arm my system for motion detection?

When you first set up your Blink system, your system will be Disarmed by default, as seen below.

When you tap the toggle next to Disarmed, you are arming your Blink system.

WAt the base of your home screen, you will now see Armed

Each camera that successfully arms will display a green motion icon

In this state, the camera will detect motion, record a short clip and you will receive a notification on your device.

You can disable an individual camera from arming by tapping this green motion icon. When the system is armed and motion is disabled for a particular camera, a gray motion icon will be displayed

With the camera in this state, motion will not be detected. Your home screen will look similar to this:

In this state, your Front Door camera will detect motion and record clips, your Hallway camera would not detect motion and record clips.
